Steps to Becoming a Driving Instructor
We support you at every stage of your journey to becoming an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI).
Working with the DVSA
First, you will need to apply to the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) to become an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI). As part of this, you will provide details about your current driving licence, including any driving offences, and obtain a criminal records disclosure number.
You can submit your application to become an ADI through the official GOV.UK service. Once your application is in progress, our team can help you understand the training and tests involved.
Being an Approved Driving Instructor can be a highly rewarding career. You will be helping people learn an essential skill for life and gain independence and confidence on the road.

What Makes a Great Instructor
The role involves working with all kinds of people, from nervous first-time learners to more confident drivers honing specific skills.
To thrive as a driving instructor, you should have strong people skills and be comfortable building rapport with learners from different backgrounds.
- Patience and understanding when supporting nervous learners.
- A thorough knowledge of the theory and practice of driving.
- The ability to teach clearly and adapt to different learning styles.
- Awareness of changes to driving test regulations and best practice.
- Good business sense to manage your time, pupils and income.
Working Hours & Lifestyle
Learner drivers often want to fit their lessons around school, college or work. That means you may sometimes need to work early mornings, evenings or weekends to suit their needs.
In return, you gain flexibility and control over your own schedule, with the ability to choose when and how much you work.
If you are motivated, organised and enjoy helping others, becoming a driving instructor with A Star Auto & Manual could be an excellent long-term career move.
